How to Water Plants

Water in the morning

Water evaporates quickly during the day; while at night, the soil is warm. But watering plants in the early morning allows water to seep to the roots for longer. The roots are the part of the plant that needs the nutrients, sugar, and hormones contained in the water.

Generally, water the base of the plant and not the leaves. Wet leaves can attract insects, fungus, and disease.

Water less days a week but for longer

Instead of watering everyday, water two or three times a week. But for longer. Water seeps into the roots.

Water the right amount for each plant

After getting into a new watering rhythm, you can now focus on particular plants.

PlantAmount of Water
Rose2 times per a week
Pomegrante2 times a month
Lime2 times a week
Sage1-2 times a week
Rosemary1-2 times a week
Mint7 times a week
Potatoes2 times per a week
Hibiscus1-2 times per a week

Closeness When Apart

Maya Marshall: How do we build real closeness in a digital era when trapped on platforms?

Eddie Glaude Jr.: The way in which we are trying to continue community and stand in right relations with each other with these conditions, what will it look like what we get on this other side of this, it might just be even deeper if that makes sense.

Maya Marshall: So, I certainly hope so. I think that’s a real possibility out of the project of making time for one another.

Meadows before John Muir

Muir actually misunderstood the “untouched” part as well. The open meadows he admired that afforded broad views of the geological splendors of Yosemite weren’t the hand of nature; they were the result of strategic fires set by the Miwok to prevent undergrowth and catastrophic forest fires. Forty years after the Miwok were gone, so were the meadows.

Open Letter to Sony and Guerrilla Games

Thank you for Horizon Zero Dawn. The game was important for me personally. The story’s science fiction was astounding; Aloy is complex, heartful, and a powerful lead.

I eagerly await Forbidden West. Now that the secret behind the first game has been revealed, I think that it would be in Sony’s benefit to acknowledge the story’s debt to Native communities in America.

The dress, the face paint, the ceremonies, the weapons, the religions, the communities all reference Native peoples in the Americas. Also, the land in the first game, from Utah through Colorado, is a part of the sacred land of many peoples. While Horizon is a computer generated artifact, its land is a facsimile of Native land.

I bring this request to you because Native communities, like many across the United States, are suffering during the pandemic. A similar pandemic led to societal break down in Zero Dawn. This is the time for companies who have vocalized a commitment to equality and inclusion, like yours, to provide some concrete steps to demonstrate this.

Reaching out to Native communities in the West would provide a great opportunity to acknowledge your game’s appreciation of their cultures and also lend support where requested as they manage this public health challenge.

Think and Feel

Social Force of K-Pop Fans

American Korean popular music (K-Pop) fans donate to social causes, hijack harmful hashtags on Twitter, and participate in volunteer work. With the internet, American K-Pop fans connect people to further social causes in America.

While K-Pop music is typically positive, and self-affirming, their stars had not talked politics as a rule. However, recently BTS “took a public stand, showing support toward the BLM civil rights movement and donating US$1 million to the cause.” Maybe American K-Pop fans are changing Korean stars relationship with the stardom and even their music?

So, these American fans start with their fandom, see a connection there, and then use that connection, apart from the music and messaging from the bands themselves, to be players on the American social and political scene. And they may even start to change K-pop itself. Fascinating.

Here is a radio show about K-Pop and this political moment.

Facebook and Inevitability

Mark Zuckerberg confronts that some advertisers boycott his platform. He is sure that they will return and communicated that to his Facebook group.

Facebook is not a neutral platform and business is not neutral either. Companies endorse how Facebook targets their desired demographics when they pay Facebook. It is why they pay Facebook.

Will companies return to Facebook because it is inevitable? Or is their inevitability what they are selling?

A creative business model in 2020: Ghost Kitchens

Instead of going back the 2019 business practices, some businesses expand their functions that address current needs. For example, ghost kitchens are centralized kitchens rented out to individual cooks. There is a centralized location for patrons to receive their food without a traditional restaurant space. This arrangement allows for:

  • Better safety without an indoor location with guests who cannot wear a mask
  • Cooks to start their own business with less overhead cost
  • More variety per a location for customers
